Major Awards

Comptition Entries are judged according to the National Taxidermists Association's (NTA) specifications. Individuals may request a copy of the NTA rules in the Competition Area during the Mini-Course.

Multiple ribbons are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

Open Division

I. Eligibility
Open to all registered mini-course participants.

II. Categories

  1. Selected by which specimen constitutes the major portion of the entry.
    Birds
    Fish
    Reptiles
    Mammals (Life-size)
    Shoulder Mounts
    Whitetails
    Original Art
    Habitats

    The Competition staff will resolve any questions concerning the category assignment. Their decision will be final.

  2. Novelties and Crustaceans will be judged on a comment sheet, not a detailed score sheet. No points will be assigned towards the Award of Excellence.

  3. Habitat entries must be identified as such by the participant at the time of registration.

Amateur Division

  1. Eligibility
    Open to individuals currently enrolled in a formal taxidermy training program or who have less than one year of practical experience and are registered for the Mini-Course.

  2. Categories
    All categories that exist in the Open Division are available in the Amateur Division.

Competition Entry Fees

A $20.00 fee per entry will be required at the time the entry is received by the competition staff. Do not send competition entry fees with the mini-course registration form.

If a participant wishes to have an entry rejudged, a $30.00 fee per entry to be rejudged is required.

Fees may be paid by cash or check. A $20.00 processing fee is charged for checks returned for insufficient funds.

Thursday, May 15, 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. or Friday, May 16, 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Entry Deadline
No entries will be received or changed by the competitor after 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 16.

Judging
Friday, 9:30 a.m. until completed.

Peoples Choice Viewing and Voting
Friday, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Posting of Awards and Time for Critiques with Judges
Saturday, 12:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Announcement of Awards
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Pick Up Competition Entries
Saturday 2:00 p.m.

Major Awards

Judges Best of Show
Judges select winner from the Best of Category awards in the Open Division. In making the selection, judges are not bound by score but will consider the mount's overall merit.

Best of Category Award
Awarded to Entry that receives the highest first place score in a category.

Breakthrough Award
Awarded by Breakthrough Magazine to Judge's Best of Show.

People's Choice Awards
Selected by the registered mini-course attendees.

McKenzie Awards
The best lifesize, bird, fish, and shoulder whitetail entries in the Open Division. Selected by the judges and awarded by McKenzie Taxidermy Supply Company.

Morgan Reptile Replica
Awarded by Morgan Reptiles for the best reptile entry.

Van Dyke Award
Awarded to the one entry judged to have the most original and creative presentation in the overall competition (Open/Professional or Amateur) by Van Dyke Supply Company.

Wasco Award
Open to participants in the Open and Amateur Division. Judges select the most artistic entry. Awarded by Wildlife Artist Supply Company.

Woody Award
Awarded by Taxidermy Today Magazine to honor excellence in taxidermy. Selected from the blue ribbon winners.
